In a House in the Middle of Nowhere
When thinking about if i could live in a house secluded for a year without anything I instantly said no. However, I then sat back and thought about what I was giving up and if I really wanted to if I could. Honestly, I feel like if I had to give up the technology and possessions I would but if I had to choose then no I wouldn't. I have become accustomed to all the things that I possess and feel that I do not need to give them up to learn more about myself. Now that sentence may sound a bit snooty I know, but I can survive without these things. At my home I had one television until this year, I did not have cable until 8th grade (getting 1-2 channels during the summer), I do not get cell reception, and did not have wireless until last year. In my opinion I have had my fair share of not having the technology 24/7 that I know other people have had, and I survived! In my opinion if I did choose to live in a house in the middle of nowhere I would miss not my technology but someone to talk to and have fun with. I need more than anything the people I love and being unable to have that part of me would kill me. I do not believe I would learn more about myself because I believe that you learn more about yourself in life itself interacting with people around you, or even just being around people. If I took myself away from all of this what would I learn?

Interaction with those we love is important...I'm pretty sure that even Thoreau entertained a few visitors...but giving up the "mechanical aides" that bind us shouldn't be so hard...
ReplyDeleteIt would be hard to live in seclusion, even if someone did stop by every couple of weeks or so. I think living in seclusion is more daunting than giving up technology.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it would be nice to not have to deal with anyone else's life and drama for a while. Probably not a whole year, but I could imagine it being pretty nice not to have to hear all my roommates... drinking on a Sunday night for example.
ReplyDeleteI totally can relate to this. I always had everything when I was little until I got to about 8th grade and everything went downhill until last summer! But I wouldn't give up my technology for anything. It makes life so much easier! Even though some days I do just completely ignore my phone (during warmer days) but as of right now, I wouldn't.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you being out in the middle of nowhere by yourself, you will be really lonely.
