Proud Member of the Dumbest Generation
When I read the articles pertaining to Mark Bauerlein's book The Dumbest Generation I was honestly angry. I do not think it is fair that a man can judge anyone below the age of thirty. Yes, I realize we do say things like "my brother is only eight and already has a cell phone", but we never comment about their intelligence. I believe that our world is ging into a different direction one that Bauerlein cannot really comprehend. Our generation no longer has to fret over knowing which years Nixon was in office, we can Google it. Instead we can spend our time more wisely educating ourselves on what we are most passionate about and not the little things that really do not weigh on whether we are dumb or not. Honestly, I believe that our generation is quite intelligent. It may be a different intelligence then what was before but there has been many good things that have happened and many good things to come from us.

I agree that your generation has a "different" intelligence. I'm not sure, however, that even though you know how to "google" information, that the quality of that information is very significant--in the arts and humanities sense, at least.
ReplyDeleteI like how you pointed out that we may say those things about those younger than us. We don't say that they are lacking intelligence at all. I know for a fact that my sister is smarter than me in math. It's a fact. Yet we are definately privleged because we have all this at our finger tips. We are able to make up for what we aren't as good in. In our society we are blessed with being able to focus on and work with the talents that we do have.
ReplyDeleteOur generation does have a "different" type of intelligence. We aren't book smart, but we are technologically smart. And like you said, thanks to technology we have the opportunity to focus on what we're passionate about. Who knows what that could bring in the future. Hypothetically, Do you think people will care that the person who discovers the cure to cancer didn't know who was the 17th president of the US. Because I don't.
ReplyDeleteYeah we focus our knowledge on things that will help us in the future and not just facts about the past.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Our generation has the technology to study and try to comprehend more complex material now rather than small facts that we can look up in an instant. We have the opportunity to spend our time on what really interests us and what pertains to our future.
